Description:
Bay Area musician Tanukichan's second album is completed. Gizmo," which also features Toro y Moi (Chaz Bear) and others, and is released on Chaz's label, Company Records. At the time of the pandemic, Bay Area musician Hannah van Loon had a dog named Gizmo, who became a necessary companion while she wrote her second album as Tanukichan. Gizmo, aptly named for her new four-legged friend, is an exercise in freedom from situational obstacles (e.g., forced lockdowns) or self-imposed hedonistic coping mechanisms. 'The theme I always had was escape. It's an escape from myself, my problems, my grief, my cycles," van Loon explains of his follow-up to 2018's "Sundays. To convey the more uplifting spirit he sought in "GIZMO," van Loon turned to the radio pop rock of his own childhood. She adds, citing artists such as 311, The Cranberries, and Tom Petty, "I was struck by the honest positivity in the lyrics." Toro y Moi's Chaz Bear is the primary collaborator on "GIZMO," and the jangly pop of "Take Care" showcases some fiercely distorted guitar work reminiscent of Bear's "What For?" and "Maha.
